Sessions are run on Wednesday nights from 6pm to 9pm during each 11-week term.

Course Summary

Join Kazue Kawauchi to learn dressmaking for stretch fabric. Kazue is a designer and dressmaker who has extensive experience in high-end, ready-to-wear manufacture for leading Australian brands, couture gowns, and costume work for theatre, advertising and film. Her expertise includes extensive experience with stretch fabrics for dance, exercise and street wear.

This course is designed for all skill levels and you will be guided to choose a project suited to your experience. Students can complete dance costumes, exercise wear or street clothes. Students may start with a commercial pattern and create jeggings, sew and embellish a dance costume or learn techniques to adjust the style of commercial patterns and customise their own design project.

Embellishment techniques suitable for dance and street wear are taught and these include the application of crystals, beads and sequins to garments using glue and hand applications.

Course Content

Suitable projects include:

  • Jeggings and leggings
  • Stretch pants, skirts, shirts and dresses
  • Pyjamas
  • T-shirts and casual tops
  • Dance costumes for ballroom dancing
  • Dance costumes for children
  • Exercise and dance wear for fitness classes

This course will cover:

  • Pattern selection
  • Properties of stretch fabric
  • Fabric selection
  • Adjusting and fitting a pattern
  • Sewing equipment for stretch fabric using a sewing machine and overlocker
  • Sewing techniques for stretch fabric
  • Embellishing stretch fabric

Skill Level

Suitable for all skill levels. Students are assisted to choose a project and may use a commercial pattern or draft a pattern from a favourite garment to complete their project.

Prior Knowledge

No prior knowledge required. Students receive a handout on enrolment that assists them in matching there sewing experience to a project. It is an advantage to have undertaken our Taming Your Overlocker workshop, but not a prerequisite.

About Kazue Kawauchi

Kazue is an experienced pattern maker and dressmaker who, in her own words, is passionate about spreading the joy of sewing and helping others through her skills. She has experience in realising designs from concept to garment for couture gowns, commercial dressmaking and costume design. Early in her career, Kazue was a machinist producing garments for high-end Australian labels and she has run her own business designing and creating accessories for the home and children’s sewn toys. Her career has included extensive work with stretch fabrics to create and embellish outstanding creative designs for stage, dance and theatre work.
